Care homes in Baden-Württemberg: what the south-west costs
In the south-west it is mainly the cost of care that drives the co-payment. How heavy the first two years are and how much the supplement gives back later.

Step-by-step calculation
- vdek average for Baden-Württemberg on 1 July 2026: EEE €2,401 (incl. training levy €164), board and lodging €1,153, investment costs €463.
- Month 1 in the home: supplement 15 % of the EEE = €360.15 (section 43c).
- Co-payment = €2,040.85 + €1,153 + €463 = €3,656.85.
Estimate using the 2026 amounts in Book XI of the Social Code. Only the decision letter from your Pflegekasse is binding. How we calculate
In Baden-Württemberg care home residents paid an average of €3,657 a month themselves in their first year on 1 July 2026, rank 4 among the German states (vdek). Most of that is the care part: €2,401 before the long-term care fund’s supplement, the second-highest figure in Germany after Berlin and €313 above the national level. Since January alone it has risen by €114. Board and lodging cost €1,153 and investment costs €463, both closer to average. Because the supplement under section 43c of Book XI of the Social Code only reduces the care part, residents in Baden-Württemberg gain more than average from a longer stay: €3,297 in year two, €2,817 in year three and €2,216 from year four. The first two years together cost about €83,443. Compared with Bavaria the first-year co-payment is €387 higher.
Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria side by side
| Baden-Württemberg | Bavaria | Germany | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Care co-payment (EEE) | €2,401 | €2,185 | €2,088 |
| Board and lodging | €1,153 | €979 | €1,068 |
| Investment costs | €463 | €434 | €521 |
| Year 1 | €3,657 | €3,270 | €3,364 |
| Year 2 | €3,297 | €2,943 | €3,051 |
| From year 4 | €2,216 | €1,959 | €2,111 |
The gap narrows over time. In year one Baden-Württemberg is well above Bavaria and the national level; from year four only slightly above. The reason is the high care part, three quarters of which the fund then covers. For families, the financially hardest phase is the first 24 months, which add up to about €83,443.
Check the care part in the contract
Because the care part is the largest item in the south-west, that is where homes differ. Ask for the current EEE and enter it in the calculator. A home must announce and justify any increase in advance, usually after a new rate agreement with the funds; the rise of €114 since January shows such adjustments are frequent at the moment. See the supplement for how it is calculated and who pays for a care home if money runs short.
